Purpose: This study was done to identify factors influencing successful aging in elderly people.
Method: The participants were 186 elderly people living in M city. Data were collected from April 12 to May 2, 2012; The measurement tools for this study were Kim Shin¡¯s successful aging scale, Jon¡¯s self-esteem scale, and Hong¡¯s social support scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression analysis with PASW 18.0 program.
Results: A positive correlation was found between social support, self-esteem, employment program satisfaction, perceived health status and successful aging. These factors accounted for 56.8% of the variance in successful aging.
Conclusion: Results indicate that improved self-perceived health status, self-esteem, and social support in elderly people will promote successful aging and therefore there is need to develop programs to improve both self-esteem and social support for elderly people.
